mixing / Memory and desire

From 22 September until 22 October BredaPhoto presents the exposition 'mixing / Memory and desire' with work of seven photographers who made an international breakthrough since their debut at BredaPhoto.

“Lilacs out of the dead land, mixing
Memory and desire, stirring
Dull roots with spring rain.”
(from: T.S. Eliot, ‘The Waste Land’)

New talent

Every two years, BredaPhoto exhibits the best in contemporary photography, but also shows new talent. In these past years, the Academy Project has become a preferred supplier of the festival programme. BredaPhoto has established fruitful partnerships with art academies in the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany and, starting this year, Hungary as well. A year before the start of the festival, students, teachers and curators start working on new projects with the aim of exhibiting the best work at BredaPhoto. Not in a hidden back room, but right in between the crowd pleasers.

mixing /Memory and desire

The exhibition mixing / Memory and desire shows the work of seven photographers who have won prizes, made astonishing new work and published exceptional books since BredaPhoto. In this way, the exhibition takes stock of the ‘harvest’ of ten years of Academy Projects. But we also want to look ahead. These young photographers are still at the start of their career and we can only wonder about what the future will bring.

The 7 photographers

One of the participants is Tom Callemin, who made his BredaPhoto debut in 2014 with a series of mysterious works he called Hinterland. Since then, FOAM in Amsterdam has named him as one of the biggest talents of our time. He’s had several solo exhibitions, one of them in Fotomuseum Antwerp. His picture ‘Freefall’ embodies the momentum of this exhibition, and is therefore chosen as a core image for this exhibition.

Sanne De Wilde’s series on the ‘island of the colorblind’ was featured in international media and exhibited in New York and in Arles. Frederik Buyckx was lauded as ‘photographer of the year’ during this year’s Sony World Photography Awards. Max Pinckers, Lisa Spilliaert, Peter Dekens and Philip Schuette have also been abundantly praised these past few years. They show us their recent work.
