BredaPhoto Extended: Pride Photo
As of 18 October
Pride Photo is an Amsterdam based non-profit organisation founded in 2010, which aims to celebrate, and create awareness around, the multiplicity of LGBTQIA+ experience through the medium of photography and visual storytelling.
By bringing together the work of international photographers, artists and makers, Pride Photo strives to represent the plurality and diversity of the LGBTQIA+ community. Offering a glimpse into the broad spectrum of gender and sexual diversity through both individual and collective expression. The annual photography contest, which is free to enter, and open to photographers at all stages of their careers, results in a unique exhibition curated and showcased throughout the Netherlands, and internationally.
Pride Photo Contest
Since 2011, Pride Photo has hosted an annual international photography contest, dedicated to showcasing LGBTQIA+ stories, identities and visual languages. The contest is free to enter and open to professional and amateur photographers, and consists of 2 categories: ‘Singles’ and ‘Series.’ An overall winner is selected from each category by an independent Jury Panel, and the annual Guest Curator. Each year a newly selected independent jury of professionals in the field of photography are brought together as a panel to review the contest entrants and decide on each winner. An exhibition is then crafted by a carefully selected Guest Curator to highlight dedicated and relevant themes.
The Pride Photo Exhibition
The Pride Photo Exhibition, which is developed by a carefully selected Guest Curator, offers a broad array of impactful and striking visual works gathered through the annual contest.
Every year, the exhibition is officially opened as a publicly-accessible exhibition in the centre of Amsterdam. The exhibition goes on to travel throughout the Netherlands, and in galleries, public spaces, museums, and embassies internationally. The exhibition is the result of a freely-accessible contest, judged by a high-caliber jury of professionals in the sector of Fine Art Photography and Photojournalism. The jury, consisting of Mohamad Abdouni, Diego Moreno, Amma Waslander, Déborah Claire & Alejandra Ortiz selected 2 winning works from over 9193 entries in the categories of singles and series.
‘Invisible’ by Alexis was awarded as the Pride Photo Award 2024 winner in the category of Single Image. The 2024 series winner is American photographer Julie Sundberg with their work ‘I Remember Everything‘’.
Pride Photo Team
To succeed the ambitious plans for Pride Photo 2024 the team has been working hard on new and exciting plans. We are welcoming our new director Zindzi Zwietering and would like to present to you the other faces behind this year’s organisation.
“I am incredibly pleased and proud to finally share that I will become Managing Director of Pride Photo from 1 March 2024. I am a big believer in the power of stories. Stories can be used to empower and humanise, to give meaning and create safe spaces. I am extremely excited to build on this unique organisation, one of the world’s few photography archives full of LGBTQIA+ stories worldwide. I hope to grow Pride Photo into an international space for reflection and connection.” – Zindzi Zwietering
