Theatre of Dreams

Festival Theme 2022

Hope changes the world
“Another world is not only possible, it is on the way. On a quiet day I can hear her breathing.” This is what the Indian writer Arundhati Roy wrote in 2005. In April 2020, at the start of the pandemic, her article ‘The pandemic is a portal’ was published. In it she says: “Historically, pandemics have forced people to break with the past and re-imagine their world. The Covid pandemic is no different. It is a portal, a gate between one world and the next.”

A different course
BredaPhoto recognizes itself in this hopeful longing. After all, if there were real, structural problems before the outbreak of the pandemic, now is the time to change tack. Or as the French theorist Bruno Latour puts it: “If common sense asks us to restart production as soon as possible, we should shout back: ‘Absolutely not!’ The last thing we have to do is repeat exactly what we have done before.”

Visual language for the future
With the choice of the title ‘Theatre of Dreams’, BredaPhoto asks its artists in 2022 to deal with the current imagery that we constantly come into contact with. The radical art practices are working on a powerful presentation of a visual language for the future. ‘Theatre of Dreams’ is about hope. And about a real change in our power of imagination. Do you long for the same?
