Amera Elnaal

Through quiet yet powerful scenes, she documents their daily rhythms and their resilience in the face of a world that has often ignored or misunderstood them. 

This project moves between tenderness and hardship, between presence and erasure. It reclaims narrative through family archives, emotionally charged imagery, and a visual language rooted in care and remembrance. 

The Salt Ate Away Her Eyes opens a window onto the beauty, injustice, and dignity that intertwine in the everyday lives of those who live unseen. 

Specially for BredaPhoto, relief photo expert Daphne Wageman has developed three prints for the project The Salt Ate Away Her Eyes by Amera Elnaal. Elnaal documents the daily life and resilience of her blind parents. Through these relief photos and the accompanying audio guidance, visually impaired people can experience the images of Amera Elnaal. Sighted visitors are also invited to experience the photos; they offer a different perspective on Elnaal’s project and perhaps also on life with a visual impairment.

Photographer Daphne Wageman herself went through a temporary period of blindness and has since devoted herself to developing relief photos. In the more than ten years she has been working on this, she has designed relief photos for various institutions and continually refined the concept.

BredaPhoto offers free access to visually impaired visitors who wish to experience these photos. Our volunteers are on hand to help wherever needed.
