Webinar Tina Farifteh

For this special edition of Photo31, interviewer Claire Hoogakker talks with Tina Farifteh about her installation ‘When I saw the sun and the moon at the same time,’ which was developed especially for BredaPhoto. This installation is part of ‘Tina in Sexbierum’, a transmedia project about displacement, detachment, the longing for a home and at the same time the inability to feel at home in a society that continuously rejects you existentially.

“If society offers no home, could there be a place for displaced people in landscape?”

The Iranian-Dutch photographer and filmmaker came to the Netherlands from Tehran when she was 13 and graduated cum laude from the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague in 2021. With her graduation project ‘The Flood’, Tina won multiple awards, including the Royal Academy Bachelor Award 2021, the FotoFestival Naarden Talent Award 2021 and the 2nd prize for storytelling at De Zilveren Camera. The audiovisual installation covers the ultimate consequence of the use of water metaphors such as wave, current and tsunami in refugee reporting. NRC called her one of the rising stars in the field of culture.

This year Tina Farifteh was awarded the first prize of De Zilveren Camera in the storytelling category for her documentary ‘Kitten or Refugee’. With this short documentary, she explores the mechanisms behind empathy and its interaction with the great amount of suffering that we are faced with on a  daily basis. Tina manages to present current developments almost as philosophical art in order to emotionally engage the viewer in socially important topics.

Tina often combines images, audio, text and data. Her photographic approach is conceptual and always based on thorough research. She entices us to look at subjects we would rather look away from, due to their complexity or discomfort. She also points us to the political language that often leads to dehumanization and how that normalizes absurdity.

The installation ‘When I saw the sun and the moon at the same time’ is a 24-hour in 24-minute trip along the Frisian Sedyk and is the first chapter of the transmedia project ‘Tina in Sexbierum’. It is produced by journalistic production agency Prospektor and is co-sponsored by the Forhanna Foundation, the Mondriaan Fonds and Stichting Oog op de Natuur.

Tina Farifteh will be present in the live chat.
