MPB Gear Review: Canon RF 24-105mm f/2.8 & RF 15-35mm f/2.8

by Jeike Wullms during Life Stories

Over the past few weeks, photographer Jeike Wullms tested two lenses from MPB* for Life Stories. From the opening to other special moments in the Valkenberg and in Clublokaal - everything was captured with the Canon 15-35 and the Canon 24-105. You can read about her experience with the lenses below.

The Life Stories Mini Festival is the perfect testing environment: many different spaces and constantly changing lighting conditions. The RF 24-105mm f/2.8 convinced me immediately. A constant f/2.8 across the entire range makes the lens perfectly usable in darker situations. On top of that, it produces beautifully smooth bokeh thanks to the 11-blade aperture, and with its minimum focusing distance of 45 cm, I could easily switch from wide shots to true close-up details during the opening. Compared to my EF 70-200mm f/2.8, which I use often and which only focuses from 1.2 meters, this is a huge difference!

But the biggest surprise may well be the RF 15-35mm f/2.8. I’ve been working for many years with my old EF 16-35, but this RF version feels more modern, sharper, and brighter in every way. The wide angle at 15mm gives you beautiful, expansive overviews—perfect for the installations and gatherings at BredaPhoto. The edge-to-edge sharpness at f/2.8 is impressively good, and the lens feels wonderfully stable in hand. Exactly what you want when you’re constantly moving between scenes. An essential lens for capturing events. Both RF lenses feature the typical Canon L-series exterior: a matte, finely textured coating that doesn’t shine, doesn’t get slippery, and feels great to hold.

My first impression of both lenses is very positive: super sharp, reliable, fast, and with beautiful color rendering.
