Tina Farifteh - Uncaged
A tribute to Jina Mahsa Amini and all the brave freedom fighters in Iran

A tribute to Jina Mahsa Amini and all the brave freedom fighters in Iran
Birds don’t know about borders between countries as they often fly around freely. In Iran, a country where human rights are under pressure, birds symbolize many things. For example, in visual art or on the gravestones of freedom fighters they represent purity, beauty and freedom.
For the occasion of the exhibition Vrije Vogels (Birds) held by BredaPhoto and Grote Kerk Breda, visual artist Tina Farifteh was invited to create a work of art that shows what ‘vrije vogels’ (Free Birds) means to her. Farifteh knew straightaway that she wanted to honour the people from Iran who can no longer spread their wings.
On 16 September 2023 it will be one year ago when the Kurdish-Iranian Jina Mahsa Amini died after the morality police of the Islamic regime arrested her violently. The people of Iran took to streets in large numbers to claim their rights in her name. This resulted in death for more than 500 of them and tens of thousands of others have been arrested since then. As a tribute to everyone who has been fighting for freedom in Iran in the previous year, Farifteh created the installation Uncaged.
Tina Farifteh’s installation Uncaged will be on display from 16 September to 29 October 2023 at Galerie Ecker, Markendaalseweg 18 in Breda. Free entrance.
