Invisible border

Dimitri was born in the fishing village of Skála Sikaminéas, on the Greek island of Lesbos. At 14, Dimitri told her parents that she identified as a girl and later on asked for sex reassignment surgery. In response, she was placed in a mental institution and medicated against her will. In later years, she experienced a period of homelessness in Athens, and only returned to her family home to care for her elderly parents. After they both passed away, Dimitri felt the freedom to wear women’s clothes, which allowed her to finally feel comfortable with her identity and appearance.

In this series Dimitri is portrayed as she walks through her hometown with her head held high, wearing her favourite colour, red, to celebrate St. Dimitri’s day.
