Meet the artist: Hetty van Bommel

25 October

Sunday 25 October is the final day of BredaPhoto Festival 2026. To celebrate the end of the festival, several artists will be present at their installations.

Hetty van Bommel will be at De Fluisterwolk (The Whispering Cloud), an installation in the courtyard of the former women’s prison at the Koepel District.

De Fluisterwolk was created by Hetty van Bommel and Thierry van Raaij for the first edition of Nacht van de Doden (Night of the Dead) on 1 November 2012, an initiative by the artist duo at the NDSM wharf in Amsterdam. According to Celtic tradition, on 1 November, the souls of the deceased return to Earth for one night and one day to reunite with their loved ones. De Fluisterwolk was exhibited several more times in the years that followed. For BredaPhoto, Hetty van Bommel and Thierry van Raaij have created a new version of the installation.

Curious about how the work came to life? Would you like to learn more about Hetty’s unique projects exploring rituals surrounding grief and mourning? Come and talk to the artist!
