The British-South African photographer Giya Makondo-Wills will discuss her new project, which will be on display from 13 September to 3 November at the Stadsgalerij as part of BredaPhoto. Makondo-Wills explores themes such as identity, race, colonisation, the Western gaze, and power structures. In her new project, A Neighbourhood, she examines the Dutch immigration system and the impact of discrimination and racism on our society, legal procedures, and everyday neighbourhood conversations. Ultimately, this creates a hostile backdrop for every new “Welcome.”

Photographer Maryam Touzani explores her identity through her personal experience of being both Dutch and Moroccan. Opening her photobook Maktub invites one to reflect on the various elements that shape your identity. The innovative approach of a book that can be read in both directions highlights a flexible identity that is not fixed but rather fluid and subject to change. She frequently uses collages to reveal the friction and similarities between two landscapes that are so far apart.

This in-depth programme is part of FOTODOK‘s exhibition Grounding, Stories of Migration, which will be on display during the BredaPhoto Festival at the StadsGalerij in Breda.
