Workshop - Ecological Doka techniques

by Dinke van der Zalm

BredaPhoto is organizing three photography workshops during the festival! A portrait photography workshop by Lisa van der Rhee, the ‘Ecological Darkroom Techniques‘ workshop by Dinke van der Zalm, and the ‘The Photobook as an Object‘ workshop by Annegien van Doorn.

Dinke van der Zalm is an eco-artist inspired by issues from environmental science and the artistic potential of symbiotic processes. Through her symbiotic approach, she combines contributions from natural beings, including plants, fungi, and other intelligent organisms, with technological elements such as digital audio, artificial light, and visuals.

In this workshop, Dinke van der Zalm takes you on a journey of discovery into the ecological impact of analog photography, with special attention to the chemicals that traditionally play a key role in developing photos. She sheds light on the often hidden environmental burden of these chemicals and provides examples of more sustainable alternatives.

Together with her colleague, Lucy Schreurs, Dinke guides the participants of this workshop through an innovative process in which they will collectively create an environmentally friendly alternative to the traditional development step. Instead of using harmful chemicals, this workshop experiments with natural and biological materials that can take over the role of developer.
