Postcards from Khartoum X BredaPhoto
“In April 2023, as war erupted in Khartoum, my family and I lay on the floor of our living room while shells fell nearby. When the explosions stopped, we laughed at how absurd we looked, but beneath that laughter everything had changed. Soon after, we left our home, beginning a journey through different towns in Sudan before I eventually sought refuge abroad, carrying with me the uncertainty of displacement and the responsibility of finding safety for my family.
Living between Sudan, South Sudan, Uganda, and beyond reshaped my understanding of belonging. Each place offered moments of kindness, loss, and survival, yet none could replace the feeling of home. During this time, I returned to my father’s photo archive, revisiting images of my childhood that became a bridge between memory and the present.
This work is a search for what home means after it has been lost. Through these fragments of memory, I explore how displacement transforms our lives, and how we remember, grieve, and continue searching for a place to belong.” – Ammar Yassir
