“Photography began as a way of preserving everyday memories, ordinary moments that often go unnoticed. When war forced me from my home, it became something more: a way to process displacement, make sense of unfamiliar places, and record the emotions that shaped this new reality, as well as nostalgia, and also a way to process loss, belonging, and adaptation.
Displacement brought me back to Al-Halawin, my family’s village, where I was finally able to experience it beyond occasional short visits. As my connection to the village deepened, so did my photography. I became more drawn to the rhythms of daily life, which are mixed with feelings of uncertainty and farewell that accompanied the war. Through my camera, I documented both the resilience and the fragility of a community navigating change.
This work reflects my own search for belonging while celebrating the warmth and generosity of Sudanese life. By preserving everyday moments, I hope to create a shared memory of a place that transformed from a family destination into a true home, even in the midst of displacement.” – Fatima Alam
