Giany Kraan (GIGI) Blood is thicker than water
The project focuses on blood, as a symbol of descent, which has a profound impact on the privileges and struggles in life. Kraan explores how bloodlines are consciously or unconsciously whitened by choosing non-black partners, often as a survival mechanism. The project originated when Kraan discovered that he himself has been whitened by the choices in partners that his ancestors made, and tried to describe what that means to him.
Kraan brings together stories of different people from around the world and highlights shared experiences of anger, love and courage. He incorporates symbolism into his images, such as the red of blood, and hair resembling arteries, playing with attraction and stereotypes. He approaches and reframes the appearance of his models, reflecting on love, pride, anger and the imagination.
