Live portfolio reviews

During BredaPhoto Festival 2026, we are hosting one in-person portfolio review and two online portfolio review sessions on three different dates: Friday 11 September (in person), Tuesday 22 September (online via Zoom), and Tuesday 13 October (online via Zoom). These portfolio reviews connect emerging photographers with industry professionals, offering valuable feedback and new perspectives on their work.

We bring together industry professionals and emerging photographers, including students and advanced amateur photographers. Our reviewers are a carefully selected group of curators, editors, publishers, and photographers.

Ruben Lundgren (Curator Nederlands Fotomuseum)
Ruben Lundgren (b. 1983) is Senior Curator at the Nederlands Fotomuseum in Rotterdam. A conceptual photographer, curator, and researcher, he is known for publications including Empty Bottles (2007) and Tokyo Tokyo (2010). In 2011 he completed a master’s degree in photography at the Central Academy of Fine Arts. His two decades in China profoundly shaped his practice and led to a sustained engagement with contemporary Chinese photography and visual culture.

Lundgren worked as a photojournalist for the Dutch newspaper De Volkskrant and later established himself as an independent curator and specialist in Chinese photography. Together with Martin Parr, he co-edited The Chinese Photobook (2015), a landmark publication on the history of Chinese photography. As guest curator of BredaPhoto, he curated the exhibition China Imagined (2020). His ongoing interest in vernacular photography resulted in the acclaimed publications MeNu (2018), Dream Machine (2023), and Wildman Fever (2024).

Appointed Senior Curator in 2025, he initiated Quickscan 3: Photography Now (2026) together with Guinevere Ras, continuing his focus on photography as a reflection of contemporary culture and society.


Annaleen Louwes
Annaleen Louwes (1959) lives and works in Amsterdam. She studied photography at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie, where she later became a lecturer. She also teaches at the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague. Alongside commissions for cultural institutions, theatre companies and magazines, Louwes works as an independent artist.

Her work explores the fragile and transient nature of human existence. She is fascinated by the ways in which people survive under different circumstances, and by how these experiences affect the body and the way we carry ourselves. These themes recur throughout her photographic series and films.


Rob van Hoesel  (The Eriskay Connection)
Rob van Hoesel is a Dutch graphic designer focusing on editorial and book design. In 2011 he founded The Eriskay Connection, an independent publisher focusing on contemporary storytelling at the intersection of photography, research and writing. His work is characterized by a conceptual approach, co-authorship, and the importance he gives to meaning and communication. Van Hoesel has been often awarded at Dutch and International book design competitions, such as: Best Dutch Book Designs, European Design Awards, Aperture/ParisPhoto Photobook Awards, Deutsche Fotobuchpreis and more.


Tom J.J. Viaene (Trigger, FOMU Antwerp)
Tom J.J. Viaene is a Belgian editor, lecturer, and programmer with a background in aesthetics and intercultural philosophies. His research explores the philosophical and ethical dimensions of image making, presentation, and collection. He coordinates the Trigger book series for FOMU – Museum of Photography in Antwerp, a publication for reflection on photography. He teaches at Sint Lucas Antwerpen School of Arts, where he also serves as program coordinator for the Sint Lucas Antwerp Research Group (SLARG). Additionally, he is an editor of Grounds, the school’s research journal. He lives and works in Brussels.


Velina Stefanova
Velina Stefanova is a Bulgarian curator, artistic director, and co-founder of BECA (Before Creating Academy), an independent platform dedicated to contemporary photography and visual storytelling through educational programs, exhibitions, publishing, and international collaborations with organisations such as Magnum Photos.

As curator of BECA Gallery, she has curated more than twenty exhibitions across galleries, festivals, and independent art spaces in Bulgaria and internationally. Her practice also extends to publishing, where she has edited numerous photography books, including BLIK, BECA’s annual photo-text publication, which she leads as Editor-in-Chief.

Interested in projects at the intersection of documentary, conceptual, and personal narratives, she works closely with artists to explore how curatorial practice can generate new perspectives and meaningful public engagement.

Currently a Director’s Fellow in the One-Year Certificate Program in Curatorial Practices at the International Center of Photography (ICP) in New York, she is developing the curatorial framework for a future international photography festival in Sofia, envisioned as a platform for long-term artistic collaboration and international exchange.


Samira Damato (Pride Photo)
Samira Damato is a Maltese-German filmmaker, curator and cultural programmer based in Amsterdam. She is currently the Artistic Director for the Pride Photo organisation.

Samira has worked with multiple high-caliber cultural foundations, NGO’s and institutions such as Greenpeace, Friends of the Earth (Milieudefensie), EuroPride, the World Press Photo Foundation and NOOR images, to curate and develop exhibitions, cultural programmes, and educational workshops, ensuring their accessibility and working to create sincere and urgent dialogue with a specialised focus on environmentalism, human rights, and inclusive representation.


Frederiek Biemans
Frederiek Biemans is an independent curator and programme maker. She curates and produces exhibitions and related public programmes. She was artistic director of Humanity House, where she shaped the artistic and curatorial direction of exhibitions and programmes exploring international and global issues around peace, justice and migration.
